How do I plan one piece of content?

How do I plan one piece of content?

Write the question in the reader's words. Decide what they should be able to do after the piece. Then choose the format: a short video if you must show a motion, a post if you have one argument, a guide if they will follow steps later.

The first lines should state the point. A posting schedule does not rescue a piece nobody needed. One finished answer is the plan. The next piece should be the next question, linked from this one.

Rights, labels, and language

Use words, music, and photos you have the right to publish. If you draft with AI, check the facts and follow the platform's current label rules. Do not present a generated scene as proof of a real event.

Write in the language your audience reads. A machine translation you have not read is not ready. Disclose a paid mention when the platform or the law requires it.

A one-page plan you can reuse

Before you write or film anything, answer these questions in a note. It takes ten minutes and stops most rewrites.

  • Audience: who exactly is this for, and what do they already know?
  • Promise: the one thing they will be able to do or understand at the end.
  • Format: article, short video, carousel or thread, chosen for where your audience already is.
  • Outline: three to five points in order, each one sentence.
  • Proof: an example, screenshot or result that shows the point is true.
  • Next step: what the reader or viewer should do after.

Turn one piece into several, without copying

Once the main piece is done, adapt it to each platform's format instead of posting the same file everywhere. Platforms have their own limits: for example, X's help centre gives a standard post as 280 characters, and Instagram says reels over 3 minutes are not recommended to new audiences (both checked 7 October 2026). So a long article might become one short Reel, one X thread and one carousel, each written for that place.

Frequently asked questions

How do I pick the topic?

Use a question you have already been asked. If you cannot name the person, the topic is still too vague.

How long should it be?

Long enough to answer, and no longer. A short complete piece beats a long one that hides the point.

Do I need a content calendar?

A short list of questions is enough. A calendar of empty slots creates filler.

Should I post the same piece everywhere?

You can adapt it. A raw copy often looks wrong because each app crops and cuts differently.

How do I know it worked?

The right people finished it or asked the next question. A view from the wrong audience is a weak success.

Can I use AI to plan?

It can list angles. You still choose the question, check the facts, and use material you have rights to.
