Fiverr for beginners: create a gig and get your first order
Fiverr for beginners
Fiverr is a marketplace where a buyer orders a packaged service, called a gig. Fiverr for beginners works when the gig says exactly what the buyer receives. A title such as "I will do anything" does not. A title such as "I will edit a 60-second video with captions" does.
Create the account on Fiverr's own site. Read the current seller terms, fee, and payout methods there. On 2 October 2026 Fiverr kept 20% of each order (the full breakdown is further down this page). Fees and payout countries can change, so your order page is the final word on what Fiverr keeps and what you receive.
What to put in the first gig
One gig is enough. Include the deliverable, how many revisions, the file you will send, and what you will not do. Add samples you made. Do not buy reviews. Fiverr prohibits fake engagement, and a new profile is safer with honest samples than with rented accounts.
Your profile photo, language, and response time matter because the buyer cannot meet you first. Write in the language you can actually work in. If you serve clients worldwide, say which languages and time zones you can reply in.
Orders, delivery, and getting paid
Deliver inside the order. Moving a buyer off Fiverr to avoid the fee can break the terms and remove your protection if the client disappears. Keep messages on the platform until you know the rules.
Payout options depend on your country. Some sellers use PayPal, Payoneer, or a local method. If one option is missing, check Fiverr's payout page for your country instead of paying a third party to "unlock" it.
Fiverr fees in 2026 (checked 2 October 2026)
Sellers: Fiverr keeps 20% of each order, including extras and tips, so you receive 80%. A US$50 order pays you US$40 before any payout or currency fee from your payout method.
Buyers: Fiverr adds a service fee of 5.5% to the buyer's payment, plus US$3.50 on payments under US$200. That fee is paid by the buyer, not taken from your 80%. It matters because the buyer sees a higher total than your gig price, so a cheap gig is not as cheap for them as it looks.
Money is not withdrawable the moment an order completes. Fiverr holds earnings for a clearance period first, and the payout methods offered (for example bank transfer, PayPal, or Payoneer) depend on your country. Open the Earnings page in your own account to see both.
Step by step: publish your first gig
Fiverr asks for the gig in a fixed order. Prepare each part in a document first, so you are not writing under pressure inside the form.
- Overview: a title that starts with "I will" and names one deliverable, the category and subcategory that match it, and search tags a buyer would type.
- Pricing: up to three packages (Basic, Standard, Premium). Each one states what is delivered, the delivery time, and the number of revisions.
- Description and FAQ: who the gig is for, what you need from the buyer, what is included, and what is not.
- Requirements: the questions the buyer must answer before you start, such as brand colours, a script, or the raw files.
- Gallery: images or a short video of real work you made. Do not use another person's portfolio or stock mock-ups that you did not design.
- Publish: Fiverr may ask you to verify your identity or phone number before the gig goes live.
Worked example: a beginner video-editing gig
Title: "I will edit your short video for TikTok, Reels or Shorts with captions". It names the format, the platforms, and the extra value (captions) in under 80 characters.
Description opening: "Send me up to 3 minutes of raw footage and I will return a 30 to 60 second vertical video with cuts, captions, background music from a licensed library, and a cover frame. Delivery in 3 days."
What makes it work is that a buyer can predict the result. Change the details to match a skill you can actually deliver, and price the smallest package at a level where the work is still worth doing well after the 20% fee.
- Basic: one video up to 30 seconds, captions, 1 revision, 3-day delivery.
- Standard: one video up to 60 seconds, captions, music, cover frame, 2 revisions, 3-day delivery.
- Premium: three videos up to 60 seconds each, captions, music, cover frames, 2 revisions each, 5-day delivery.
Mistakes that slow new sellers down
Most new gigs fail for ordinary reasons, not because Fiverr hides them. Check your gig against this list before you publish and again after the first week.
- A vague title that lists several services instead of one result.
- Samples that do not match the gig, or samples you did not make.
- Delivery times you cannot keep. Late delivery and cancellations hurt your seller metrics.
- Replying slowly to the first messages. Buyers often contact several sellers at once.
- Asking for contact details or payment outside Fiverr, which its terms do not allow.

Frequently asked questions
How do beginners get orders on Fiverr?
Publish one specific gig, add real samples, and write a description a buyer can skim. The first orders usually come from a clear offer, not from a long list of skills.
Does Fiverr charge sellers?
Yes. On 2 October 2026 Fiverr kept 20% of each order, including extras and tips. Each order page shows the exact amount. Do not trust an old screenshot from a blog.
Can I use Fiverr from any country?
Many countries can sell. Payout methods differ. Confirm your country on Fiverr before you build a catalog that depends on a payout you cannot receive.
Should I offer a very cheap gig?
A low price can attract the wrong brief. Price the smallest package you can finish well, and say what is included.
Is it allowed to ask friends for fake reviews?
No. Fake reviews break marketplace rules and can close the account. Use real samples instead.
What if a buyer asks to pay outside Fiverr?
Keep the first jobs on the platform so the payment and the dispute process still apply. Read Fiverr's current off-platform rules before you agree.
What fee does a Fiverr buyer pay?
A 5.5% service fee on the payment, plus US$3.50 when the payment is under US$200 (checked 2 October 2026). It is added to the buyer's total.
How many gigs should a beginner create?
Start with one or two gigs that each sell a single, clear result. More gigs on unrelated skills make the profile harder to trust.
