Free online courses with certificates: a verified list

Free online courses with certificates

Free online courses with a certificate exist, and the useful ones name the school or company, the hours, and whether the certificate is free or paid. A common pattern is a free course with an optional paid certificate. Read that line before you enroll so you are not surprised at the end.

Places to check yourself include Google's learning programs, Microsoft Learn, free university courses on edX or Coursera audit modes, and official tool academies. Offers change. This page does not rank a sponsor. Open the provider's site and confirm the price of the certificate today.

What the certificate is worth

A certificate shows you completed that course. It does not show you can do the job. Employers and clients ask for a sample. After the course, make one project that uses the lesson: a page, a design, a short video, or a written brief.

Do not upload identity documents to a site you found only through an ad. Use the provider's official domain. If a page says the certificate is free and then demands a payment app you do not recognize, stop.

Verified providers (checked 2 October 2026)

Each line says what is free and what is not. All of these are run by the organisation that issues the certificate, so you are not paying a reseller. Offers change; the course page is the final word.

  • Harvard CS50 (computer science): the course is free at cs50.harvard.edu, and Harvard issues a free CS50 certificate if you score at least 70% on every required problem set and the final project. A verified certificate through edX is a separate paid option.
  • freeCodeCamp (web development, JavaScript, Python, data): free lessons and free certifications earned by completing the required projects.
  • HubSpot Academy (marketing, sales, content, customer service): free courses with free certificates.
  • Google Skillshop (Google Ads, Google Analytics and other Google tools): free training and free product certifications.
  • IBM SkillsBuild (AI, data, cybersecurity, workplace skills): free courses with free digital credentials (badges).
  • Microsoft Learn (Azure, Microsoft 365, Power Platform, AI): free training modules and learning paths. Formal Microsoft Certification exams are paid, and the price depends on the exam and country.
  • Kaggle Learn (Python, machine learning, data visualisation): short free courses with a free completion certificate.
  • Google Career Certificates (IT support, data analytics, UX design and others): the main ones are sold through Coursera by subscription; Google lists US$49 a month in the US and Canada. Coursera offers financial aid you can apply for.

Pick a course by goal

Choose the course that leads to something you can show. A rough match:

  • Build websites or start coding: freeCodeCamp, then CS50 if you want the computer-science foundations.
  • Digital marketing or social media jobs: HubSpot Academy for content and inbound marketing, Google Skillshop for Ads and Analytics.
  • Data and AI basics: Kaggle Learn for hands-on Python and machine learning, IBM SkillsBuild for broader AI literacy.
  • IT and cloud roles: Microsoft Learn paths, followed by a paid exam only when an employer you are targeting asks for it.

How to make the certificate count

Put the certificate on LinkedIn under Licenses and certifications with the issuer's verification link, so an employer can check it. Next to it, link one project you built with the skill: a website, a dashboard, a campaign plan, or a notebook.

Finish one course before you start the next. A single completed certificate with a project beats five half-finished courses, and most of these providers show your progress so you can return later.

Frequently asked questions

Are there free online courses with a free certificate?

Some providers include a free certificate. Others charge for the certificate and leave the lessons free. The course page should say which one it is.

Do certificates help beginners get work?

They help a little as a signal that you studied. A portfolio sample helps more. Use both if you can.

Which site is best?

The best site is the official one for the skill you are learning. Check Google, Microsoft Learn, the tool maker, or a university course, and ignore lists that hide affiliate links as the only reason to enroll.

Can I put a certificate on Upwork or a CV?

Yes, if you earned it. Do not invent one. Put the project you built next to it.

Are course certificates the same worldwide?

The file can be downloaded in most countries. A local employer may or may not treat it as formal education. It is not a government license unless the issuer says it is.

What should I do after the course?

Finish one practice project in a week and publish it or add it to a portfolio. Then take the next course only if you still have a gap.

Which free online courses give a free certificate?

On 2 October 2026: Harvard CS50 (free CS50 certificate), freeCodeCamp, HubSpot Academy, Google Skillshop, IBM SkillsBuild (digital badges), and Kaggle Learn. Microsoft Learn training is free but its certification exams are paid.

Is the Google Career Certificate free?

Not usually. Google sells it through Coursera by subscription, listed at US$49 a month in the US and Canada on 2 October 2026. You can apply for Coursera financial aid.
