How do I make useful Instagram Reels?
How long a Reel can be, and what gets recommended
Instagram's help centre says you can record one or more clips that add up to 20 minutes, but that reels over 3 minutes will not be recommended to new audiences, and that longer recording is not yet available to every account (checked 7 October 2026). If you want new viewers to find a Reel, keep it at 3 minutes or less.
A simple Reel structure
Most useful Reels follow the same shape: show the result first, then the steps, then what to do next. Write the on-screen text before filming, so every clip has a job.
- First second: the finished result or the question you answer.
- Middle: three to five quick steps, each one clip.
- End: one clear call to action, such as saving the Reel or reading a guide.
- Add captions or on-screen text, because many people watch with the sound off.
- Use your own original audio or audio from Instagram's library, not a song you ripped from elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make a useful Reel?
One idea, a clear first second, and a length that fits the point. Captions help people watching without sound.
Do Reels have to use a trending sound?
No. A trend can help discovery and can also bury the point. Use a sound you have the right to use.
What is a good length?
As long as the idea needs, inside the limit the app currently allows. Check Instagram's current length in the app. Do not pad.
Should I put text on the video?
Yes if the viewer needs the words with the sound off. Keep the text large enough for a phone.
Why did my Reel get views and no enquiries?
The view was for the clip, not for an offer you never stated. Say what you do if the goal is a client.
Can I use a Reel as an ad?
You can boost or run ads under Instagram's current rules. Read those rules. A Reel is not automatically an ad.
